Elena’s Beautiful Elopement Story
At The Wedding Veil Shop, we take pride in creating veils that reflect not just the bride’s style, but also her unique story. Recently, we had the pleasure of crafting a custom veil for dreadlocks, featuring veil loops instead of a comb, for real bride Elena. Elena’s special day called for a tailor-made veil solution that would work with her dreads which she planned to wear in an elegant updo. Her elopement in Scotland highlighted how our innovative design, ensured a secure fit even in challenging weather conditions!
Elena’s Journey to Gretna Green
Elena and her husband didn’t plan to elope; it was a decision that emerged from a particularly challenging period. With family members facing severe health issues and living far away, they found it nearly impossible to organize a traditional wedding. “We always dreamed of a big wedding with all the rituals—preferably somewhere warm, like Italy,” Elena shared. “But life had other plans. Gretna Green became our salvation in ways we didn’t expect.”
Their elopement to the historic Gretna Green was a heartfelt choice. Despite the rain and wind, their intimate ceremony was a moment of solace among the beautiful scenery.
Tailoring Veils for Dreadlocks and Braids
Elena’s beautiful dreadlocks required a tailor-made veil with an alternative fastening to the traditional veil comb, one that would work equally well for dreads, braids or locs. Traditional combs wouldn’t work for her style, so we designed a veil with custom veil loops, allowing her to use an elastic cord matched to her hair colour to secure it in place.
“It was absolutely freezing, about 12 degrees, and raining all day—everything you’d expect from Scotland! The veil stayed on, even when it felt like it had a life of its own in the wind! It didn’t come off, which was hilarious.”
The custom loops allowed Elena to easily secure and remove the veil herself. “It was so easy to put on and take off, and it withstood the Scottish elements remarkably well,” she said. “I had to remove it later due to the prickly vegetation around, but it held up beautifully.”
Why Custom Veil Loops Are Ideal for Dreadlocks and Braids
For brides with dreadlocks or braids, a tailor-made veil with loops provides the perfect alternative to traditional combs. Here’s why:
- Flexibility: Veil loops for braids or dreadlocks offer multiple ways to secure the veil, such as with elastic cords or hairpins/grips.
- Comfort and Fit: Unlike combs that can snag or ruin beautiful braids, veil loops adapt to the shape and volume of textured hairstyles, ensuring a secure fit.
- Personalisation: Brides can select a securing method to feed through the loops that will blend with their hair colour, making the veil look seamless.
Elena’s experience showcased the effectiveness of this approach: “The veil was absolutely perfect, and it was beautifully packed too ❤️.” Even with the unpredictable weather, her veil remained secure during outdoor photos at scenic spots.
A Wedding Filled with Laughter and Love
The couple’s elopement was quietly romantic, but had some joyful moments, too. “We had to pay for two witnesses at Gretna Green’s Famous Blacksmith Shop, and when they saw the veil’s writing, ‘Never gonna give you up,’ they couldn’t help but sing. We even had a little dance after the ceremony!” Elena recalled fondly.
Despite the intimate nature of their ceremony, the veil played a significant role in making their day special. “The only thing I regret is that no one (apart from my husband, photographer and a few randoms) has seen my dress and your fabulous veil.”
Tips for Securing a Veil with Dreadlocks or Braids
For brides with similar hairstyles, here are some tips:
- Custom Loops: Opt for a veil with loops rather than a comb for more versatility and a secure fit.
- Elastic Cord: Use a strong elastic cord that matches your hair colour for a seamless, secure fit.
- Practice: Practice securing your veil before the big day to ensure it holds up throughout the celebrations.
- Weather-Proofing: For outdoor weddings, especially in windy or rainy conditions, make sure your securing method is durable enough to withstand the elements.
With the right approach, a tailor-made custom veil for dreadlocks, braids, or any other hairstyle where a veil comb is not an option, allows brides to wear a veil that complements their hairstyle while staying secure all day. Whether you’re eloping or celebrating with loved ones, a custom solution will make you feel confident and comfortable.
We were honoured to be part of Elena’s journey, and if you need a custom veil for dreadlocks or braids, we’d love to help you create something perfect for your special day.
Thank you, Elena, for sharing your story with us. We wish you and your husband a lifetime of happiness!
With best wishes,
Lynsey
