What Is A Cathedral Veil?
Defined by its length, the cathedral length veil is an incredibly striking and dramatic extra long veil. It truly is a veil created for maximum impact! Whether you opt for a plain or ornate style, they’re always beautiful and create the best photography prop money can buy!
Unless your dress has an extremely oversized train, a cathedral length veil is usually long enough to extend past the train on most dresses.
How Long Is A Cathedral Length Veil?
The cathedral length veil is the longest traditional wedding veil length and is commonly 114 inches (290cm) from the comb to the ends. That's an impressive 9.5 feet (almost 3m) long!
Can You Wear A Cathedral Length Veil With Any Dress?
The extra long cathedral length veil works well with pretty much any dress. But it's particularly well-suited to dresses with long/wide trains.
That’s not to say brides with shorter trains couldn’t rock a cathedral length veil as well if that’s always been their dream — just look at the court length dress worn by our model Jess, for example. It just means there will be a bigger distance between the end of the train and the end of the veil. But hey, it worked for Meghan Markle!
The History Of The Cathedral Length Veil
Cathedral length veils have now been around for some time but they became particularly popular in the 1980s after Princess Diana wowed us all with her incredible 24-foot long one designed by David Emanuel.
As with chapel length veils, cathedral veils are named after wedding ceremony buildings. The grander the venue, the longer the veil. At least that was the idea back in the day. Nowadays, you can happily wear a cathedral veil to a beach wedding and look absolutely fabulous while doing it!
Our cathedral length veils are 114 inches from top to bottom on a single layer veil, and 144 inches combined length on a two-layer veil (30"+114"). Check out our Veil Length Guide for more on this.
What Is Longer Than A Cathedral Length Veil?
Traditionally, the cathedral veil length has always been the longest of the traditional veil sizes, but in recent years an even longer version has popped up called royal length. If you follow the existing increments between our longer veils that would mean a royal length veil would be 132 inches. But because we offer custom veils and our brides can have any length they like, we’ve decided to leave our veil length guide at cathedral length and anything longer can be requested as bespoke. For example, a 5 metre long veil has been requested several times now. Again, thanks Meghan Markle!
